What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a positive, forward-looking approach that combines talking therapy with hypnosis.
The talking therapy helps you gain a clear and simple understanding of how the brain works and why you may be experiencing certain thoughts, feelings or behaviours. We focus on where you are now, your preferred future and the small, positive steps that can help you move towards it.
The second part is hypnosis. This is a deeply relaxing state, similar to guided meditation, where you remain aware and in control throughout. You can relax as deeply as you feel comfortable.
What happens during the initial consultation?
The initial consultation is an opportunity for us to meet, talk about what has brought you to hypnotherapy and discuss what you would like to achieve.
I will gather some personal information, including your contact details, any medication you are currently taking and some relevant lifestyle information. This helps me tailor our work to your individual needs.
I will explain how the brain works in relation to your individual circumstances and how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy may be able to support you.
There is no hypnosis during the initial consultation. Following your consultation, you will be given access to my relaxation MP3 to listen to at home.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis, or trance, is a natural state of focused attention and relaxation. We experience similar states naturally in everyday life, perhaps when driving a familiar route, reading a book or becoming absorbed in a film.
Think of hypnosis as a guided meditation.
Many people describe hypnosis as deeply relaxing. You remain aware and in control throughout the session.
Will I lose control or say something I don’t want to say?
No. Hypnosis is not mind control and you cannot be made to do or say something against your will.
You remain in control throughout the session and can bring yourself out of trance at any time.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No. You cannot become stuck in hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a natural state and you can return to your usual level of awareness whenever you choose.
Will I remember everything after hypnosis?
Most people remain aware of the session and remember what has been said. You may find that your attention drifts at times, in much the same way as it can when relaxing or daydreaming.
Everyone experiences hypnosis slightly differently.
Do I need to talk about my past?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not require you to revisit or analyse difficult experiences from your past.
I do not need to know the details of your past experiences to help you move forward. You are always free to share what feels relevant to you, but our work is primarily focused on where you are now, where you would like to be and the positive changes you would like to make.
How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is different, so the number of sessions required can vary depending on your individual circumstances and goals.
Typically, clients may attend between 8 and 12 sessions, although some may require more. We will regularly notice and discuss your progress together.
You are free to end therapy at any time.
How often should I attend sessions?
Sessions are generally most effective when attended regularly, and clients usually attend weekly.
The time between sessions allows you to put your next steps into practice and supports the changes we are working towards.
If you have a holiday planned, that’s absolutely fine. We can simply resume your sessions when you return.
I will explain why weekly sessions are recommended and we can discuss what is most appropriate for your individual circumstances.
What can Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help with?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy may be able to support people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, stress, low confidence, sleep difficulties, phobias and unwanted habits.
Please visit my Treatments pages for more information about the areas I work with.
Do I need to listen to the relaxation audio between sessions?
I will provide you with a relaxation audio to listen to between sessions.
Regular listening is an important part of our work together. It can support relaxation and sleep, while helping to reinforce the positive changes we are working towards and maintain progress between sessions.
Can I have hypnotherapy online?
Yes. I offer online sessions using an agreed video platform. Online therapy can be an effective alternative to face-to-face sessions, allowing you to access therapy from the comfort of your own home.
You will need a reliable internet connection and a private, safe and comfortable space where you can relax without being disturbed.
What happens if I need to cancel or rearrange my appointment?
I understand that unexpected circumstances can arise.
Wherever possible, please provide more than 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange your appointment. Full details can be found in my Client Terms and Conditions.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes. Your privacy and confidentiality are extremely important to me.
There are limited circumstances where I may need to share information for safeguarding or legal reasons. Full details are explained in my GDPR Policy.
Am I safe to drive after hypnotherapy?
Yes. You will be fully alert at the end of your session and able to continue with your day as normal, including driving.
How do I choose the right hypnotherapist?
It is important to choose a hypnotherapist who is appropriately trained, insured and works in accordance with recognised professional and ethical standards.
I trained at CPHT Edinburgh and hold the Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH). I am also a member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) and the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH).
Most importantly, you should feel comfortable with the therapist you choose. My free 15-minute telephone call gives us the opportunity to have an initial conversation before booking. Your initial consultation then allows us to explore what you would like support with, for me to explain how I work and for you to decide whether Solution Focused Hypnotherapy feels right for you.
Can you guarantee that hypnotherapy will work?
No therapist can guarantee a particular outcome, as everyone responds differently and progress can vary from person to person.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. Your commitment and participation are an important part of our work together, and we will regularly notice and discuss your progress.
